In preparation for our diamond anniversary, and to set the tone for our future, SGA hired a public historian to examine archival resources and compile the organization's history.
The project grew to include contributions by many of the most noted historical and cultural institutions in the nation, and resulted in a compelling exhibit titled This Southern Century: Transforming with Tradition.
The exhibit examines the remarkable transformation of the South using a “then” and “now” approach in six key areas:
- Economy: From the Great Depression to the Global Economy
- Education: From Neglecting the Future to A Promising Outlook
- Civil Rights: From Segregation to Multiculturalism
- Environment: From the Dust Bowl Disaster to Disaster Preparedness and Environmental Stewardship
- Defense and Aerospace: From “Land of a Lost Cause” to America’s Exploration and Security
- Culture: From Regional Traditions to The World Stage
This Web site features excerpts from the exhibit, along with images and video from SGA’s 75th anniversary gala celebration.
In browsing the site, SGA invites you to reflect on the Legacy of Progress made over the past 75 years, and consider the many possibilities the next 25 years of This Southern Century have to offer.
