Over the years, Southern Governors have deliberated and collaborated on a wide variety of policies and initiatives aimed at enhancing the region’s growth and prosperity. These efforts generally fall into one of five issue areas: 

• Economic Development
• Education
• Energy and Environment
• Health and Human Services

SGA’s Legislative Program for the 111^th Congress
Each year, Southern Governors identify a number of priority legislative issues on which they would like to work together at the Federal level. These issues are chosen through a consensus-based process and have a specific significance to Southern states. For the 111^th Congress, SGA’s legislative priorities are

• Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program
• Climate Change and Energy Security
• Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
• Insurance Issues

In addition to these legislative priorities, SGA’s general policies address a number of subject areas that have an important bearing on the South including, communications and broadband, the economy and economic trends, tourism, workforce development, health IT, wellness, infrastructure, foster care, HIV/AIDS treatment, energy production and natural resources.
