Travel and tourism is a huge contributor to the U.S. economy, and one of the three top industries in each of SGA’s member states and territories. The Southern region boasts six of America’s top 10 heritage destinations, making the South the hottest U.S. region for cultural and heritage tourism.
Over the years, SGA has focused on programs to promote the rich cultural heritage of the South, developing tools and strategies to support member governors as they work to build stronger economies. Among these programs are “Soul of the South,” an exciting Web portal to connect Southern musical traditions with the growing trend towards cultural heritage tourism; Guide to Best Practices in Southern Tourism and Destination Management, a comprehensive review of successful initiatives, including marketing strategies, advocacy and sustainable tourism programs and trails, roads and parkways partnerships, through which Southern states have increased visitation and tax revenue, and most recently, a series of interviews with member governors to showcase the diverse attractions in their respective states.
Through partnerships with organizations such as the Travel Industry Association of America, Travel South, Southeast Tourism Society and state/territory tourism offices, SGA will continue its efforts to foster growth in the region’s bountiful tourism industry.
