The creation and development of a functioning interoperable emergency communications system in the Southern region, that takes into account the availability of dedicated spectrum and the necessary investment in broadband infrastructure, is a priority for Southern governors. Our governors support efforts to generate objective reliable data that will clarify what infrastructure and resources are needed, and advocate on behalf of plans that will most effectively and cost efficiently develop regionally and nationally interoperable emergency communications systems.
Moreover, an extensive advanced networking infrastructure that supports broadband technology adoption and deployment is critical to creating opportunities in the areas of education, research, health, homeland security, agriculture, tourism, government and economic development for Southern communities.
Southern governors will continue to pursue federal programs and resources that encourage state efforts to identify and map the gaps in broadband access, and SGA will continue to focus its regional efforts on ensuring the compatibility of high-performance and networked technologies through the use of public-private partnerships.
