Although cautious about the rate of growth for North Carolina's economy, Gov. Bev Perdue struck an optimistic chord during a packed-house visit to Boone Monday.

As part of a tour of western towns, Perdue's visit came at the invitation of local chambers of commerce and mostly dealt with what she called the three most important issues affecting the state now: "Jobs, jobs and more jobs."

"You need a jobs governor and you need a jobs General Assembly," she said.

In light of continued double-digit unemployment rates through December - at 10.9 percent - Perdue blamed a lack of available credit for small businesses as one culprit, adding that if small businesses can't get access to capital, they can't expand or hire new employees.
