Climate Change and Energy Security

SGA 2009 Annual Meeting

Southern Governors engaged in a broad dialogue about climate change and energy security during the annual meeting in Williamsburg, Virginia. The agenda for this gathering was developed to support the region’s Governors in the further exploration of energy efficiency, smart grid technologies, green corridors and other climate topics to both protect the region's vast environmental resources and promote its economic well-being.  Below are links to various presentations offered during the meeting.

Sen. John Warner
Maj. Gen. Richard Engel
Tom Peterson

Brian X. Tierney
Bob Gilligan

Under the leadership of SGA Chairman Virginia Governor Tim Kaine, SGA is providing a forum for member Governors to explore together federal, regional and state policy options for climate change and energy security. The goal of this initiative is to start a dialogue between Governors, their policy staff and energy advisors about the South’s role in the Federal debate on climate change, opportunities to mitigate the impact of climate change on a state level, and prospects for regional collaboration.

By the end of Governor Kaine’s chairmanship of SGA, in August 2009, SGA expects to have produced a regional analysis of the costs and benefits of various state policy options. In collaboration with the Southern States Energy Board, SGA will also produce a white paper on the various climate and energy initiatives that are ongoing throughout the region. Efforts are underway to continue defining the scope of this initiative, and more details will be posted here when they become available.
